Electric Solar Panels

Solar panels for electricity offer great cost savings in residential settings.

Electric solar panels can be a great alternative to save energy and money, while helping conserve environmental resources.  These solar panels work by using photovoltaic cells to convert the sun’s radiation into viable electrical energy.  Adding solar panels for electricity to your home provides the opportunity to bring renewable, clean energy into every appliance you use.  Though solar electric panels can be very expensive, they are an investment that will pay off in the long run, by saving on money that would normally have gone right in the pocket of a power company.

When choosing electric residential solar panels, there are three different varieties.  The three types are monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and amorphous solar panels.  Monocrystalline are the most common and tend to be the most energy efficient solar panels for converting the sun’s rays into electricity.  Monocrystalline cells are made from one crystal and are recognizable by the circular shape that appear on monocrystalline solar panels.  Because the crystals aren’t diluted or tampered with, monocrystalline panels will provide the most energy in the fewest number of panels.  That’s usually the main reason monocrystalline panels are a first choice solution to energy in any home.

Whereas monocrystalline solar electric panels are composed of cells made from a single crystal, polycrystalline are cells made by slicing silicon cells into smaller evenly shaped pieces before being placed on a solar panel.  Because of the complicated process required to create polycrystalline solar panels, most of the original resources are diluted, and therefore require more panels to achieve the same result as one monocrystalline panel.  Polycrystalline isn’t as energy efficient, but is still a very good option if you only have one choice and want to help the environment.

Amorphous electric solar panels are made from a non-crystalline allotropic type of silicon.  Amorphous panels are nowhere near as effective as monocrystalline panels, and are even less effective than polycrystalline panels.  Amorphous solar energy requires quite a few solar panels for electricity in order to work, and tends to be less energy efficient.  You’ll have a very hard time living off the grid if you plan on using amorphous solar energy.  The electricity still works, you just won’t have enough to run a household in most cases.

Solar electric panels are very expensive, and will vary in price according to the types mentioned above.  Pound for pound monocrystalline panels are the most expensive, but you will need fewer panels overall to get the job done.  Polycrystalline and amorphous panels tend to be less expensive, but require more units to produce the same amount of energy as a few monocrystalline panels.  Overall you can expect to spend in the area of $5,000 to upwards of $15,000.  But there are many government tax breaks which would allow you to get back upwards of 50% of your investment.

Plus, electric solar panels afford you the opportunity to get off the grid and maintain clean renewable energy that’s good for the environment.  Installation of these panels is also expensive, but think of it as more of long term investment.  You will save money over time, and you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint in the process.  That’s worth the investment.
